Certificate of Achievement + Third Scholarship Recipient Team Lead: Joann Xie Team member: Steven Xie, Alan Liu-Sui Project Abstract: According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), as of 2022, one-third of fisheries all over the world are overfished. Today, according to the World Wide Fund (WWF), populations of freshwater fish have dropped by 76% since 1970, leading to one-third of freshwater fish species being critically endangered and facing extinction. One species in great danger of extinction is the bluefin tuna, its population dropping by 96.4% according to a 2013 scientific report made by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas(ICCAT). This is mainly due to overfishing, and despite its scarcity, the Pacific, Atlantic, and Southern bluefin are all still heavily fished in San Diego and China.
Our cause does not only protect over 400 species of ocean wildlife, but also advocates for the worldwide plastic pollution crisis, as nylon fishing nets lost in the ocean are a leading cause of ocean plastic waste. Through this project, we hope to spread awareness on the severity of the issue of overfishing and encourage others all over the world to make an impact. Although America and China are on opposite sides of the world, we all share one ocean, making this issue impact the entire globe.
