June 7, 2017
Alliance of Chinese Americans San Diego (ACA) proudly announces and congratulates the recipients of the 2017 Mayor’s Student Recognition Award: Huryoung Vongsachang (張和阳), Andre Yin (尹安舒), Sean Wei (魏志諠), and Valerie Chen (陈煦安)。
Huryoung has recently graduated from San Marcos High School. While maintaining an outstanding academic record, he has worked selflessly for years on- and off-campus and made substantial impact in the community he served. Among many volunteering programs he participated, the most notable was the ‘city-wide intervention group’ he created to help youth with mental illness, following the tragic death of his friend due to depression. Huryoung received National Alliance on Mental Illness Certification for his care and initiative.
Andre Yin is a junior at Westview High School. With all his amazing academic accomplishments and excellent athletics, he always remains humble and grounded. As a kid growing up with asthma, he was once helped by American Lung Association (ALA), and now is inspiring other children with asthma to be happy and striving. In the past five years, he has exemplified his cheerful, inspiring, and dedicated leadership through volunteering at his school, Boy Scouts, ALA and other clubs. His drive, determination and perseverance set him on a successful path in serving the community.
Sean Wei, a young sophomore from Canyon Crest Academy, has been a veteran in community services. His passion to serve the community has led him to his participation in international charity works when he was just a middle schooler. His active involvement in Tzu Shao has also created the opportunity for him to grow from a participant to a leader. Sean has taken on more responsibilities from planning and leading the activities to directing other members in various events. Volunteering as the summer camp counselor, he further developed his leadership skills. His outstanding civil engagement and community services has made him a three-time recipient of Presidential Volunteer Service Award (2015-2017).
Valerie Chen, a Del Norte High junior, not only excels in her academic studies, but also is an acclaimed cello player who was recently recognized as the best high school cellist in the nation. She has demonstrated her leadership as the president of School String orchestra and founded Del Norte’s Tri-M Music Honor Society, a music volunteering club at the school. She has led her peers to use music to help others by performing around the community for different groups such as the nursing homes, and, volunteering for the music department and other events like the Annual Benefit Concert. She enjoys the rewarding experience of volunteering, especially seeing her music bring joy to people.
ACA wishes to thank all the applicants for their hard work and involvement in their community. Their achievements at the young age have truly demonstrated each applicant’s character and potential. We encourage them to make continuous effort to serve their community, and wish them further success in their future endeavors. ACA also wishes to thank the Chinese American community for the overwhelming support. Finally, we wish to express our gratitude to the review committee, composing of nine community leaders, for their time and dedication in carefully evaluating all the candidates and selecting the award recipients.
About MSRA:
MSRA was established by the Mayor of San Diego and Asian Pacific American Coalition (APAC) to recognize those high school students who have demonstrated leadership in community service and actively participate in outreach programs, in addition to academic excellence in school. By recognizing these students, we hope to promote and develop next generation civic leaders who will engage and represent the Chinese American community.
The review committee is composed of nine Chinese community leaders, representing Chinese American Association, Youth Care Club, Tzu Chi Foundation, San Diego Chinese Academy, North County Chinese School, SDAAFE, ACA (2) and an unaffiliated community volunteer. To ensure a fair and unbiased evaluation, each reviewer was instructed to strictly follow the guidelines and to provide full disclosure on relationship with any candidates in case of potential conflict of interest.
This year’s event was organized by ACA with the assistance of the previous host, San Diego Asian Americans for Equality (SDAAFE).
About ACA San Diego: ACA is a non-political and non-profit organization serving the San Diego Chinese community. Its mission is to educate, empower and engage the recent Chinese immigrants, help them to assimilate the American culture and become thriving citizens.
