API Summer Internship in Journalism
ACA is currently accepting applications for the Asian American Advocacy Journalism Scholars program, which includes a 10-week internship. This scholarship opportunity is open to three high school students from the local community who successfully complete the program.
API Summer Journalism Internship program aims to offer a valuable training opportunity for students who are passionate about Asian American culture, social justice and civil engagement. Through the program, participants will gain insights into the journalism industry, conduct in-depth research and interviews for articles related to API community, use various digital media tools for writing, editing, and publishing articles. The scholarship will consist of a 10-week hybrid program with both virtual and in-person meetings. The recipients are expected to write at least three articles highlighting stories, events, and organizations in the Asian American community in San Diego. The articles will be shared on social media to bring them to the attention of the Asian communities, as well as on the ACA website and potentially other local publications.
The applicants will go through a rigorous selection process. Upon satisfactory completion of the internship assignment along with a positive review by program coach and the ACA board, a $500 scholarship will be awarded with the scholars for their advocacy work.
ACA board has recruited an experienced journalism coach YJ Si to work with the interns this summer. YJ Si is a college student at University of Southern California, double majoring in journalism and philosophy. He was a Community Journalism Scholar with the San Diego Union-Tribune in 2021, editor-in-chief of the Westview High School Newspaper The Nexus, which won the San Diego County Fair Best of Show award in 2022. He currently reports for USC’s Annenberg Media and Daily Trojan.
