Background
COVID-19 has resulted in schools shut all across the world. Globally, over 1.2 billion children are out of the classroom. As a result, education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms. Research suggests that online learning has been shown to increase retention of information, and take less time, meaning the changes coronavirus have caused might be here to stay. As of May 2020, we are still unable to foresee schools re-opening or parents going back to work in a traditional way. We observed many problems we encountered. High schoolers and their families will continue to be physically isolated. There is an increasing need for parents and families to share the pressing issues that are commonly shared: How do we deal with learning on a daily basis? How can we conclude the current semester or the quarter with a reasonable grading system? How are we able to ensure the families who have limited ends are able to access online learning effectively? How can we support high schoolers to continue the study group, clubs, academic interests, and social responsibilities online? How do we better support rising seniors for college applications? These questions all need to be answered. Even if the pandemic comes under control, the world will not be the same as before. A few high-tech giants already announced their encouragement to employees to work from home until the of 2020 or 2021. Twitter already announced that they will let their employees work from home permanently. Under such circumstances, the platform of virtual communities will be very much needed for student social life, school life, and professional growth. As Chinese American descendants, we understand ACA’s values of Liberty, Equality, Diversity, Democracy, Individualism, and Unity. Therefore, we came up with the idea of “Virtual Community for High Schoolers and Their Families” in order to connect the San Diego high school communities during these times as well as after the end of the pandemic. We would be honored to be supported by the ACA organization.

Goal
The goal is to make connections of high schoolers and their families through a forum website: within the same school (e.g. Canyon Crest Academy) within the same school district (e.g. San Dieguito)

Method
(1) Content: We will use WordPress to build up a forum website, which will act as a platform for the virtual community. Users will be able to post or comment on existing posts either with an account or anonymously. Posts can be anything the user wishes to share- text posts, picture posts, links, anything. Ideally, school administrators and staff members are active on the forum. Anyone with an account can make a post at any point in time and allow the staff members as well as other users to see the posts and perhaps start a discussion with each other on any topic. This allows for a more connected community, between parents, students, staff, and school administrators.
(2) Security & privacy: Cyberbullying, harassment, and personal attacks will not be tolerated. Users’ privacy will be protected. General protective measures will be enforced.
