ACA has strived to fulfill its mission to educate, engage and empower Asian Americans. One of our primary focuses is to encourage civic engagement in younger generation. Last summer, in partnership with Civic Leadership USA (CLUSA), ACA launched a successful internship program with local government offices. The objectives of the program are to train and cultivate future civic leaders, as well as to build a strong relationship between local governments, elected officials and API community. The inaugural program in 2019 was such a success that 16 outstanding API students participated, and six of them have been placed as interns in local, state or congressional government offices.
ACA will host a leadership forum to celebrate the success of our inaugural internship program. The forum will also provide an opportunity for internship students and others to share their experience, learn from each other, and explore future opportunities. The preliminary program includes the following activities:
- Panel discussion by youth students on civic engagement for API youth and the impact on their future career
- San Diego API history of civic engagement as told by veterans and community leaders
- Information session on 2020 internship program
- Award ceremony for those who have completed the internship
