Teens Helping Seniors with Grocery Shopping
A Project Funded by Alliance of Chinese Americans San Diego
Alex Chen
Background
The current Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the daily lives of Americans and especially the seniors in our society. Seniors are a higher risk of medical complications if they are exposed to the novel Coronavirus. The highest proportion of deaths from covid-19 arises from the elderly population. Thus, many seniors are afraid to leave their homes to perform routine daily tasks such as shop for groceries and pick up medications.

Goal
To bridge the gap between youth and seniors by offering free, no-contact grocery delivery to senior citizens which will allow them to enjoy fresh food. To also protect the health of seniors by delivering masks.

Progress Updates
(June 5, 2020)
Thank you so much for the opportunity to work with the ACA on a covid project. Here is the update on the Teens Helping Seniors grocery delivery project. We have spent the past few weeks to update the website so that seniors can submit forms online with their requests and that volunteers as well can sign up to help online. We are receiving more inquiries from seniors and also recruiting volunteers from different neighborhoods in San Diego.
Our outreach campaign has included visiting groceries and leaving flyers, sending letters and flyers to local senior communities, posting on NextDoor, posting on social media sites (San Diego senior groups on facebook, San Diego news organizations), and obtaining permission to post flyers in communities near communal mailboxes. Our ad ($300 fee, newspaper gave us a free upgrade from 1/8 page to ¼ page) will run on 6/4 in the Carmel Valley News which will be distributed to households in Carmel Valley, Del Mar and Solana Beach. The newspaper will also run a free press release in one week for our organization.
The first grocery delivery service was successfully completed this week.
It is taking time to build trust and spread news of the service but we remain excited and committed to helping seniors in our community. Thank you for supporting our efforts.

In the past few weeks, we have increased our total delivery count to 7. We have 15 volunteers, and some serve communities as far as Oceanside. Also, is it possible we use the other $400 that was meant for protective equipment for advertising instead? Our volunteers already have protective equipment and so do the seniors, so we do not need to spend the money on those.
