Care 4 Community
A Project Funded by Alliance of Chinese Americans San Diego
Emma Lin
Background
Since February 14th of this year, San Diego County has reported a total of 8,729 positive cases of COVID-19, alarming its many residents. The novel coronavirus knows no discrimination, and its impact can be felt among citizens of all colors, ages, socio-economic statuses, and professions. In the last few months, health care workers have worked tirelessly on the front lines, hazarding themselves to “pathogen exposure, psychological distress, and occupational burnout” (World Health Organization) for the sake of their community. While the rate of positive cases has slowed recently, it is imperative that we continue to support medical workers to the best of our ability, not just focusing on their physical safety, but also their mental wellbeing. Local senior citizens have been heavily affected by COVID-19 as well, as they face the dangerous combination of an increased risk of COVID-19 for people over the age of 65 and the communal nature of senior centers; thus, they deserve assistance from younger, more able-bodied members of the community. Many students have lost opportunities that were available to them before the pandemic. Fortunately, this loss has translated into a positive outcome, as students have more time to connect with local volunteer organizations that are in dire need of support.

Goal
The novel coronavirus knows no discrimination and has devastating effects on citizens of all colors, ages, socio-economic statuses, and professions. Our goal is to bring various communities together, with the help of social media, by matching students to volunteer organizations and sending resources to both healthcare workers and local senior centers.
