Aid to Alleviate Poverty and its COVID- 19 Effects
A Project Funded by Alliance of Chinese Americans San Diego
Melinda Lu
Background
COVID-19 has caused those living in poverty to be in a dire situation. Ordinarily, around one hundred thirty million people suffer from a lack of food. However, the pandemic has caused over three hundred million people to go hungry this year, leaving many families to starve.
More specifically, in San Diego, those below the poverty line are severely struggling. San Diego County ranks 13th in poverty rate among other U.S. metros, with 14 percent of our population living under poverty lines. The sad reality is that coronavirus will cause around 200,000 people in San Diego to be impoverished, with little food, unless we change that.
I am currently working with the Borgen Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating global poverty through fundraising and meeting at the congressional level to enact poverty reducing bills. My branch of the Borgen Project is focusing on San Diegans affected by COVID- 19, focusing on providing meals for San Diego’s poor.

Goal
The goal is to raise 500 dollars to combat coronavirus and its effect on the poor, by fundraising through banking: door-to-door, texting, and calling. The money provides healthy meals for the poor, and would significantly decrease the amount of people that would go hungry this year. Additionally, to provide aid to those in impoverishment, I am hosting two food drives, and donating the food to local community centers and food banks.

Method
1. Create a website with a fundraising page, links to the Borgen Project, and videos on how poverty leads to other major problems, such as police brutality and crime.
2. Start first fundraising campaign, door banking around neighborhoods (while social distancing)
3. Once $150 is reached, the first food drive will be hosted. At this event, we will continue to promote the Borgen Project and ask for donations.
4. Second fundraising campaign, text and phone banking, along with a social media giveaway, which will entice people to donate.
5. Once $300 is reached, the second food drive will be hosted. There will be more promotion for this event as well.
6. Social media blitz, text and phone banking to fundraise
7. Once the $500 goal is met, I will host a giveaway of a prize, and the people entered are those who donated money.
